Mark Batten is a partner in the Labor & Employment Law Department and co-head of the Class & Collective Actions Group at Proskauer Rose, LLP. He represents employers nationwide in several industries at all stages of complex employment litigation, in collective bargaining, before the NLRB, labor arbitration, organizing campaigns, and day-to-day advice on contract administration and more. Before his time at Proskauer, Mark also worked as a trial attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Division in Washington, where he was lead counsel in major litigation for over two dozen federal agencies, ranging from the U.S. Air Force, the CIA, the U.S. Secret Service, HUD and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Mark Batten has had extensive experience representing media properties and publishers including the Boston Globe and Gatehouse Media’s many daily and weekly newspapers. . Referring to the many new challenges in the print media industry, Mark said, “With so many fixed costs and such an oppressive set of economic factors, management and their unions were in the same boat. To survive they had to find a way to partner and work collaboratively across the table. And they did.”
Mark spoke more on this topic during his speech at the CGA dinner, saying that “it is all the more important as newspapers’ position becomes ever more precarious, that labor and management face these challenges together, in the spirit that animates the Boston Labor Guild.”
