Negotiations Seminar

Take the mystery out of the collective bargaining process and learn the inside game of collective bargaining negotiations. This hands-on, nuts and bolts course introduces the students to the key aspects of negotiating a collective bargaining agreement. It includes lecture, case studies, educational materials, simulated bargaining sessions, strategy development, and bargaining caucus experience.

Agency Allstars

James Cooper, Rosemary Pye, John Hanson, and Michael Felsen

Most workers are very much aware of various agencies that provide services and protections to employees. This course introduces the people who do this work and who can explain how their agencies enforce a specific law or laws. The course focuses on what we think are the most relevant agencies within the context of the current COVID pandemic, such as health and safety, unemployment, and wages and hours. There will also be presentations about the traditional labor/management agencies, including the State and Federal mediation services and the two agencies enforcing the basic labor/management relations, the National Labor Relations Board and the Commonwealth Employment Relations Board. We will also include the agencies dealing with employment discrimination. We want you to leave with a basic understanding of how these agencies work and return to your respective workplaces (on line or in person) and spread your knowledge. The collective experience of the above listed instructors is somewhere north of 150 years; take advantage of this opportunity: attend and ask questions.

How Do We Effect Change?: Understanding Politics, Legislation and How to Work Them

Students will learn the in’s-and-out’s of the legislative, political and campaign process, as well as how to influence them. The course will be taught by labor leaders and outside experts who will break down these processes and provide students with the tools to effectively engage in politics and legislation.

Social Justice according to Dr Suess~

This course will focus on analyzing and discussion of some of Dr Seuss’ books as a means to have deeper discussion about hidden messages behind the written word. What can we make of both the racism in his cartoons and his pro social justice messages to generations of youngsters? What can we take from these books and writings that we come across every day? Students are responsible for acquiring and reading the following books prior to class each week;

  • Week 1 The Sneetches and Marvin k Mooney
  • Week 2 500 hats of Bartholomew Cummins- Bartholomew and the Oobleck.
  • Week 3 Yertle the Turtle and The Butter Battle Book
  • Week 4 Horton Hears a Who and Green Eggs and Ham
  • Week 5 The Lorax and Oh the Places you’ll Go

These books should be easily accessible on any library site or they may have some in their homes already

The key to understanding government is to understand their budget. This four class course series will teach you how to read and de-mystify a budget. In the second class you will be taught how they are built. The third class will teach you how school budgets work and how they integrate with the municipality. The fourth class you will learn the history of GIC, the major healthcare insurance provider for municipal, county and state workers. Which also has a major impact on local budgets. This class is important for people who want to make a difference in their communities.

The Steward’s Job

The steward’s job is exciting and sometimes headache inducing, but it’s one of the most important roles within the union. Your job is to lead, organize, and negotiate with management. You must understand your contractual language, have good problem-solving skills, and recognize that sometimes compromise is the right way to move forward. There are always new things to learn so you can best represent your members while building solidarity in your union.

In this course we will emphasize the Grievance process, representing members in meetings with management and member mobilization. There will also be some role-playing exercises to enhance these skills. In order to make the course more relevant, students are encouraged to bring issues they would like covered.
