First Day of 2017 Fall Term Classes Complete!

“When Employees Benefits are No Longer Fringes” with Paul Kelly and Lou Mandarini

As waves of students trickled into the RCAB Pastoral Center in Braintree, MA, the Labor Guild headquarters, Mary Gendrolis and Maureen Callaghan were ready for the rush with two registration tables. They processed all the registered students and walk-ins with a smile, and sent them on their way to to class. With the clanging of the traditional brass school bell, off went nearly 80 students to their first period classes throughout the RCAB building.

“ABCs of Arbitration” with Jim Cooper

In “Media, Messaging and the Labor Movement” Joe Markman’s (Associate Director, Division of Public Communication, MNA) extensive background in journalism informs what he shares with students. As a former columnist at the Brockton Enterprises, Patch.com (a conglomerate local-news site) and most recently handling MNA’s media and communications at the MNA, Joe uses this practical work experience and perspective to train and advise students on how to effectively work with the media. He helps students understand how reporters and the news gathering business operate, how to help reporters understand the full context of a particular labor-management interaction or dispute, and how to work around the media’s traditional biases against union causes. With this teaching and background in mind, the class will form student groups who will create successful media campaign simulations.  Markman will be co-teaching the class alongside Lisa Fields, the Associate Director in the Legislative Division of the MNA.

In “Leadership at Every Level” with Daniel Butterfield, Chief Steward of Eversource, UWUA Local 369, students entered a conference room with walls covered in large, bolded quotes from a mix of labor leaders, philosophers and politicians discussing leadership and labor. As a creative exercise, Butterfield had each student chose a quote they felt best embodied their personal leadership style and use that quote to introduced themselves and their leadership goals to the class. Butterfield also intends to bring several leaders from different levels of labor management to discuss their strategies with the class and to bring as many perspectives as possible to the table.

These are only two of the nine classes being offered this Fall Term at the Labor Guild. Of the rest, the variety of experienced teachers and their unique teaching style offers in-depth, effective counseling on not only becoming leaders in your local but in the greater labor movement as well.
